Explaining a root canal
Every tooth in your mouth has a number of roots. The canals of each tooth contain nerves. We perform a root canal procedure to save teeth that are damaged, have infection, or are necrotic (dead). To do so, we remove the infected or damaged tissue (pulp) from within the tooth. It’s the pulp that contains the nerves and blood vessels that help keep the tooth healthy and alive. When it becomes infected or damaged, however, it can result in severe pain possibly leading to an abscess if not treated promptly.
We perform a root canal to save a tooth, rather than remove it, preventing surrounding teeth from drifting from their place into the empty space that’s left. It forgoes the need for replacement or artificial teeth such as implants, bridges, or dentures.
Considering a root canal? To confirm that a root canal procedure is necessary, visit your dentist for a thorough examination. From there, they can help you navigate your options. They’ll also advise you if you can have the procedure at their office or if you will need to visit a specialist.
