A specialized dentist, a periodontist focuses on the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of periodontal disease. Periodontists not only bring extensive training in these areas but have also fulfilled additional years of education beyond dental school. They understand the latest diagnostic and treatment techniques for periodontal disease. They also have the appropriate training and expertise in cosmetic periodontal procedures.

It’s not unusual for periodontists to treat problematic periodontal cases, such as severe gum disease or patients with more complex medical histories. They provide a range of treatments, including scaling and root planing (cleaning the infected surface of a tooth’s root) and root surface debridement (removing damaged tissue). A periodontist treats severe gum issues using a range of surgical procedures and is specially trained to place, maintain, and repair dental implants and has expertise in treating oral inflammation.
